World Junior Baseball Championship Wraps Up in Thunder Bay

The 2010 IBAF World Junior Baseball Championship today concluded with a colourful closing ceremony at Port Arthur Stadium featuring the presentation of medals, trophies and awards to the winning teams, All-Stars and individual award winners, entertainment by local multicultural groups and remarks by local, provincial and federal dignitaries.

The action on the field wrapped up late Sunday night after over three hours of rain delay before Chinese Taipei defeated Australia by a score of 8-4.  With the win Chinese Taipei, 7-1, earns their sixth medal in the last ten events but just their second gold medal in World Junior history having previously won at the 1983 tournament.  The silver medal marks the first ever for Australia, who finished the tournament with a record of 5-3, and their first medal since 1989.

The host Team Canada suffered a disappointing loss in the Bronze Medal Game by a score of 8-2 to Cuba and finished the tournament with a record of 5-3.  The Cubans, who also finished with a record of 5-3, captured their second straight bronze medal at this event.

Juniors Lose to Cuba, Settle for 4th

It turned out to be too much of a turnaround from the semi-final loss the previous night as the Junior National Team fell to Cuba 8-2 in the Bronze Medal game.

The game started out tight as neither team could score any runs through the first 4 innings. Tom Robson (Ladner, BC) was excellent on the mound during that time allowing only 2 hits while recording 3 strikeouts.

The Cubans got to Robson in the 5th in a big way when Andy Ibanez drilled a 3-run homer over the wall in right field. The blast put the Cubans on top and gave them a lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game.

JNT Walks-Off to Claim First Place

Thunder Bay-After trailing the Czech Republic the entire game, the Junior National Team clinched first place in their pool when Dalton Pompey (Mississauga, ON) who started the game on the bench, hit a 2-0 fastball over the left fielder’s head to score Philip Diedrick (Ajax, ON) and Jalen Harris (Toronto, ON) giving the JNT an 8-7 win.

“I was just trying to stay calm,” said Pompey. “I knew we had tied the game (with at least a sac fly) but then the ball started to drift away from the fielder and I knew it was over.”

Earlier in the day the upset of the tournament was recorded when the Netherlands edged Cuba in extra innings by a score of 9-8. That result combined with the JNT’s win gave the Canadian boy’s 1st place in Pool B setting up a quarter final game with Italy.
